Independent Insurance Agents Of Greater Tampa

History

(Previously known as: Tampa Association of Insurance Agents and Tampa Insurors Exchange)

In 1924, a group of Independent insurance agents formed the Tampa Insurors Exchange, which was duly incorporated as a Corporation Not-for-Profit on August 18, 1924. Subsequent name changes in 1957 and 1964 made us the Tampa Association of Insurance Agents and the Independent Insurance Agents of Greater Tampa, to more closely coincide with name changes by our national association, now known as the Independent Insurance agents of America.

One of the primary functions of the Association when it was formed in 1924, was the handling of public business. The Association acted as a "clearing house" for the placement of insurance, with an "Agent-of-Record" selected by the association to work closely with the public bodies. Commissions from the business were applied back into the community in the form of safety promotion, fire prevention, accident prevention, and other activities of the Association for the good of the community. For a number of reasons, this arrangement was terminated in 1978, at which time the Association was re-structured in order to become self-supporting.

The purpose of the Association, as stated in the bylaws, is "the promotion of common business interests of Independent insurance agencies and the protection of the interests of the insuring public." Achievement of this purpose takes many forms, among them a commitment to meeting the educational needs of the members, monitoring legislation as it affects the insurance industry, sponsoring projects of benefit to the community and the industry, and providing a forum for the exchange of constructive ideas among the members. It is also the object of the Association to promote the highest standards of business conduct, and all members are pledged to the Code of Ethics of the Independent Insurance Agents of America, which is reproduced elsewhere in this publication.

Over the years, our Association has been recognized on local, state and national levels for its’ achievement and contributions. The Tampa Board of Directors is a five-time winner of the Walter H. Bennett Memorial Award given by the Independent insurance Agents of America to the most outstanding local board in he nation, based on activities in education, legislation, public relations, membership and civic responsibility.

The scope of involvement and level of professionalism exhibited by our Association and its’ members, place it in the fore-front of associations in general and insurance organizations in particular, across the country.
